5 Tips on How to Paint Like a Pro
Embarking on a home painting project can feel like a daunting task, but if you follow a tried and true process, chances are you’ll be happy with the result. Like with any home improvement project, there’s prep work that needs to be done, proper tools to use, and some finishing touches to ensure you get the job done right.
Before you get down to business, check out these helpful tips from our team on how to paint like a pro.
Do a thorough visual inspection and complete any prep work. Check for any cracked or peeling paint, and make sure you sand those areas thoroughly so you have a smooth surface to work with. Also, wipe down any dusty areas you’ll be painting so you don’t have marks or unevenness from any dirt.
Use high-quality brushes and rollers that will get the job done right. Trust us on this one. It’s worth investing in the proper tools to ensure a great finished look. Whatever you put into the paint job is exactly what you’ll get out of it, so it’s essential you use the tools that will provide the most coverage and hold up throughout the entire painting process. Our favorite brushes and rollers are linked here.
Determine which nap will work best depending on the wall(s)/ textures you’re painting. The more texture your walls have, the thicker the nap you'll want on your roller cover so it can reach into crevices and provide complete coverage. A thin nap is preferred for drywall, and for more dense walls (like concrete), you’ll want to use a thicker nap. Don’t hesitate to ask a store employee for direction on which type of nap to buy if you’re unsure.
Protect anything you don’t want painted. Before painting your first streak on the wall, survey the room and make sure you have all your valuables covered. From furniture to floors, outlets, and hardware, it’s always worth going the extra mile to keep things neat and tidy. At the end of it all, you’ll be glad you did!
When in doubt, add another coat. Wait at least an hour to allow the paint to fully dry, and if it looks streaky, uneven, or too light, another coat should solve the problem. But remember, wait it out and then evaluate.
